Brickwork & blockwork calculator

Give the wall length and height (or the area), pick brick or block and the bond, and get the number of units, courses, and the cement and sand for the mortar. Openings can be deducted so you order what you'll lay.

How it works out the quantities

  1. 1Standard UK bricks (215 × 102.5 × 65 mm) lay at 60 per m² in stretcher bond with 10 mm joints; a half-brick wall of 10 m² needs 600 bricks before waste.
  2. 2English bond uses about 89 per m² and Flemish about 79 per m² for a one-brick-thick wall, because of the headers.
  3. 3Concrete blocks (440 × 215 mm) lay at 10 per m²; courses are 225 mm high for both brick (3 courses) and block (1 course).
  4. 4Mortar is estimated per m² — around 0.02–0.03 m³ for brickwork — and converted to cement bags and sand for the ratio you choose.

Site tips before you order

  • Allow 5% waste on facing bricks and 10% on blocks that will be cut around openings.
  • Order all facing bricks from one batch to avoid colour banding — the calculator's total helps you place one order.
  • Don't forget lintels, cavity closers, wall ties, DPC and weep vents on the quote — they're not in the brick count.
  • For retaining walls or anything structural, get the specification checked; the calculator gives quantities, not design.

Common questions

How many bricks per square metre in the UK?

60 per m² for a half-brick (single skin) wall in stretcher bond with 10 mm mortar joints. Double that for a one-brick-thick wall, or use the English and Flemish bond figures the calculator gives.

How many blocks per m²?

10 standard 440 × 215 mm blocks per m² with 10 mm joints.

How much sand and cement for 1,000 bricks?

Roughly 0.6 m³ of mortar — about 1 tonne of soft sand and 7–8 bags of cement at 1:5. The calculator adjusts for your ratio.

Does it deduct windows and doors?

Yes — enter opening areas and they're removed before the brick count.
